1. Welcome, setting and consent
Welcome, Alex. Before we begin this gentle relaxation exercise together, I want to clearly state that this is a shared, consensual experience for adults. This exercise invites relaxation. You do not have to experience anything in particular. You can speak, move, or stop at any time. Your stop word is "Pause," and saying it at any point will immediately bring us to a gentle stop so we can check in together. We will respect all boundaries, including no touching and avoiding any ocean or sea imagery. This is simply an opportunity for shared calm, attention, and rest this evening, shaped by what feels right for you in each moment. If anything doesn't feel comfortable, you can simply say "Pause" or open your eyes. There's no need to do anything specific, just allow yourself to listen in a way that feels natural. When you're ready, we can begin.
2. Induction
Let's start by finding a comfortable position where you can relax without any pressure. You can keep your eyes open or close them whenever it feels right for you. We'll begin with your breath, nothing forced, just noticing. Allow your attention to gently rest on the air as it moves in and out. Perhaps you notice the coolness as you breathe in, and the warmth as you breathe out. There's no right or wrong way. With each breath, you might become a little more aware of how your body settles, shoulders softening if they choose to, or any areas that feel ready to release a bit of tension. You can simply notice these small shifts, or not. Your mind may wander, and that's perfectly fine. Whenever you like, you can bring your attention back to the sound of my voice or the rhythm of your breathing. This is an invitation to ease into a calm state together, at your own pace. (Pause for 20 seconds of silence)
3. Deepening
As you continue listening, you might notice how each breath can help create a little more space for relaxation to unfold naturally. Perhaps your attention drifts to different parts of your body in turn, starting from the top of your head and moving downward, simply observing any sensations that are already there without needing to change them. If it feels good, you could imagine a soft, warm light or color gently spreading, but only if that image arises for you; there's no need to create anything specific. With every exhale, it's possible that a sense of ease deepens in its own way, like settling into a comfortable chair after a long day. If anything becomes uncomfortable, we can stop and check in. You might find that your focus becomes a bit more steady, or quieter thoughts come and go like clouds passing. This is all optional, simply an allowing of whatever calm wants to be present right now. (Pause for 30 seconds of silence)
4. Suggestions
In this calm space, you might notice how easy it is to simply be here with the shared intention of rest and closeness through presence. Perhaps you allow yourself to enjoy this neutral, peaceful feeling, where attention feels gentle and undemanding. It's okay to let any everyday thoughts fade into the background if they choose to, making room for a quiet sense of connection and ease. You could notice a growing comfort in simply resting together like this, without any expectations. If it arises, a feeling of being safely supported in the moment might be there, but only as much as feels right for you. This evening is for unwinding, for allowing relaxation to be whatever it naturally becomes. (Pause for 20 seconds of silence)
5. Future pacing
As this gentle time together continues, you might carry a soft sense of this calm into the rest of our evening, perhaps noticing small moments of ease or shared quiet as we simply spend time resting side by side. There's no specific outcome required, just an open possibility for the night to unfold in a peaceful way that suits us both. When the time feels right, we'll gently return to full awareness together.
6. Return to full alertness
Now, whenever you're ready, we'll begin to return. There's no rush. I invite you to take a few fuller breaths if that feels comfortable, allowing your body and mind to reorient at a pace that works for you. Any sensations of heaviness or deep relaxation that may have been present can now gently fade and return to their normal, everyday state. Any focused attention can broaden again, becoming as alert or as casual as you like. You can wiggle your fingers or toes if you wish, or simply notice the room around you. When it feels right, you can open your eyes or keep them closed a little longer. There's nothing to do but check in with yourself. Take all the time you need. Once you feel ready, please let me know how you're feeling so we can connect and make sure everything is comfortable. You are welcome to say "Pause" even now if you want more time.
7. Aftercare and reorientation
How are you feeling right now, Alex? Let's take a moment to reorient together. There's no expectation to feel any particular way. You can share as much or as little as you like about your experience. Would you like some water, or to stretch, or simply sit quietly for a bit longer? I'm here with you, and we can talk about how the rest of the evening might feel best. We can talk about what felt welcome and what you would want to change or leave out. Let's ease back into the evening with care and presence.
Stop word: “Pause”. Allow time to reorient to the room and check in together. Continue only when everyone feels fully alert and comfortable.
