Catalepsy

Catalepsy, in hypnosis, is a held posture that stays — an arm that remains where it was placed, eyelids that will not open on the first try, a body that has gone rigid in one place — without the person deciding to hold it. It is a phenomenon, a test, and sometimes a convincer. It is not paralysis, and it is not proof of a special power.

Dave Elman used eye catalepsy as an early rung: if the lids will not open, the doorway has been taken. Stage work uses arm catalepsy because it photographs. Neither use makes the thing mystical. A nervous system that has agreed to wait often waits with the muscles.

What it is not

It is not medical catalepsy, and it is not a seizure, and it is not someone "unable to move." Ask, really ask, and the hold releases. If it does not, you are no longer in a craft session. You are in a medical event. You stop. You orient. You get help. See safety.

It is not required for good trance. Plenty of excellent sessions never produce it. Chasing it as a trophy is how people start shoving arms into the air and calling the shove a phenomenon.

It is not the same as glove anaesthesia or analgesia. Those change sensation. Catalepsy changes holding.

How it is actually used

As a ratifier. You lift a forearm, suggest it can stay, let go, and it stays. The person sees their own limb doing something they did not micromanage. That sight is often worth more than another two minutes of talking. It is the same family as ideomotor signals: the body voting in public.

As a rung. Elman's eye catalepsy is a yes/no. Fail it and you do not pretend you are at the next floor. You go back, or you change doors.

As a deepener, sparingly. A held arm that is then allowed to float down can carry attention with it. Used once, it is elegant. Used as a party trick, it is a party trick.

You always release it on purpose before emergence. An arm that is still "staying" while you count to five is sloppy, not impressive.

Safety that is actually safety

Do not wrench joints. Do not stack someone into a bridge and sit on them. Do not leave a limb raised until it shakes and call the shake depth. Blood and nerves are not suggestions.

If catalepsy appears when you did not ask for it — a freeze, a lock, a face that has gone away — you do not push. You come back: name, room, date, movement in the fingers. Uninvited rigidity is a stop sign.

FAQ

What is hypnotic catalepsy? A posture that holds without being held on purpose — arm, lids, sometimes the whole trunk. A phenomenon, not a prison.

Is catalepsy necessary for hypnosis? No. It is one possible sign and one possible tool. Plenty of real trance never shows it.

Is eye catalepsy the same as being unable to open your eyes? It is a suggestion that opening can wait. A genuine request to open ends it. If it does not, the session is over and you treat the person, not the trick.

Why do stage hypnotists use it? Because an outstretched arm is visible from the back row. Visibility is not depth. It is staging.
