Elman induction

Lexicon entry. Evening-length piece: The Elman Induction: verify, don’t hope.

The Elman induction is a tested, stepwise induction associated with Dave Elman: a short formal descent with checkpoints — usually eye catalepsy, loosening of the body, and a loss-of-numbers or similar test — rather than a single long suggestion. It is paternal in tone, not because it is cruel, but because each rung is checked. Fail a rung and you do not pretend you are on the next floor.

It is the opposite temperament to Ericksonian work. Both open the same room. They argue about the stairs.

What it is not

It is not a spell with a copyrighted word order. There are as many "the" Elman scripts as there are trainers. The shape is the lemma: test, confirm, proceed.

It is not the Esdaile state. Elman taught a deep, anaesthetic-adjacent quiet and used that historical name for it. You do not need that basement for ordinary craft, and you do not owe anyone a demonstration of it. Treat "hypnotic coma" as a story from another century unless you are a clinician with a reason.

It is not faster because it is truer. It is faster because the tests skip the people who are not coming, and because the ones who are coming get ratifiers early. That is economy. It is also why amateurs copy the bark and skip the tests, then wonder why the bark did nothing.

The rungs, without a script

Eye catalepsy. Lids closed, a suggestion they can stay, a test. If they fly open, you are not at the next step. You go back, or you change doors. See catalepsy.

Body loosening. A loss of holding — arm, jaw, the sense that the muscles have given the job back. Another ratifier, not a torture.

Compounding / numbers. A simple mental task made briefly unreliable (counting, letting numbers go). The point is not amnesia as a party trick. The point is another yes that the critical chatter has stepped aside.

Then you work. Then you emerge as carefully as you went in. Elman's own teaching was obsessive about taking things off. The internet copies the drop and forgets the lift.

When to use it, when not to

Use it when the person likes clear tests, when you need to know where you are, when a long poetic door would bore them. Do not use it as an ambush, on a first date, or as proof you are "direct." Direct is a register. It still requires consent and a chair that does not roll.

Stage cousins — handshake, shock, "sleep" — share the appetite for a fast yes. They are not Elman just because they are quick. See stage hypnosis.

FAQ

What is the Elman induction? A short, tested descent: catalepsy, loosening, a simple compound test, then work. The tests are the method, not decoration.

Do I need the exact Elman script? No. You need the checkpoints. A memorised paragraph with no tests is just a fast speech.

Is Elman better than Erickson? Different stairs. Elman tells you where you are. Erickson uses what arrived. Learn both; pick for the person, not for your identity.

What is the Esdaile state? A very deep, still condition Elman revived under an old surgical name. Historical, occasionally clinical, not a hobby target.
