Deepening

Deepening is whatever you do after the induction to make trance stable enough to work in — not a contest, and not a second, better hypnosis. The induction opens the door. Deepening is the moment you stop standing in it.

If the induction was honest, a good deal of deepening has already happened. Counting, breath, a staircase, a short silence: those are often just the induction continuing under another name.

What it is not

It is not "as deep as possible." Too much quiet too early flattens images. Some work wants a bright, usable trance — the thing this house calls staying awake enough to feel. Other work wants weight and distance. Choose the depth for the job, not for the story you will tell afterward.

It is not a guarantee that suggestions will hit harder. A clear suggestion in a light state outperforms a vague one in a cellar. Depth changes the texture of the room. It does not replace direction.

It is not the Esdaile romance. Ultra-depth, "hypnotic coma," the old surgical stories — those are history and warning, not a product. You do not need a basement to do this craft.

How it is actually done

The reliable moves are few.

Count and staircase. Down from ten, or down a flight of stairs, each number paired with heavier or quieter. Old because it works. The body already knows how to follow a countdown.

Compounding. "As X continues, Y can increase." Each accepted suggestion becomes the floor for the next. That is suggestion arithmetic, not mysticism.

Silence. The most skipped deepener. Three real breaths of nothing after a good ratify. Beginners talk because silence feels like losing control. It is the opposite.

Fractionation. Up a little, down a little, several times. Each return tends to go further than the last. It is a deepener that uses emergence as its tool.

Utilisation. A swallow, a twitch, a passing car — named as part of going further. Ericksonian deepening is mostly this.

What you do not do is ask "are you deeper?" every thirty seconds. Testing is a waking job. It hauls the person back to the door to write you a report.

After it

Once the room is steady, you work — rest, image, skill, or, between adults, what the books are for. Then you come back on purpose. Deepening without emergence is an unfinished sentence. Deepening without consent was never deepening. It was talking at a closed face.

FAQ

What is hypnotic deepening? The work that steadies trance after the induction so you can actually use the state. Not a second induction. The same slope, walked a little further.

How do you deepen a trance? Count, staircase, compounding, honest silence, or fractionation. Name what is already happening. Then stop asking if it worked.

Can you deepen too far? You can make someone soggy, sleepy, or image-poor. That is the usual cost of chasing depth for its own sake. True harm here is mechanical — a slump, a chair that rolls — not "too hypnotised."

Is fractionation better than counting? It is different. Fractionation suits people who come up as fast as they go down. Counting suits almost everyone and needs less nerve. Learn counting first.
