Trance
Trance is a state of absorbed, narrowed attention in which suggestions land more easily — not sleep, not unconsciousness, and not a separate kind of mind. It is the room. Suggestion is what happens in the room.
People look for a switch. There isn't one. There is a slope: ordinary focus at one end, the deep, dream-adjacent quiet at the other, and a lot of useful work in the middle.
What it is not
It is not sleep. Sleeping people do not follow a voice in real time. If someone starts to snore, you have lost the session, not deepened it.
It is not unconsciousness. Hearing stays. Choice stays. That is why consent does not pause when the eyes close, and why "stuck in trance" is a folk tale. Without further talking, trance thins into ordinary rest or ordinary waking. The emergence is for comfort and cleanliness, not rescue.
It is not "deeper = better." Light trance with a clear direction outperforms a cellar with nothing in it. Depth is a tool. It is not a score.
On German Google, Trance is mostly a music word. The state and the genre share a name and almost nothing else. The long version of that distinction is in what trance is.
What it actually feels like
Most people report a few ordinary things, in some combination: time going strange, the body heavier or farther away, the voice easier to follow than to argue with, images arriving without being fetched. None of those is required. Aphantasia does not bar the door. Some people stay bright and verbal the whole way down. The feeling of hypnosis is not one feeling.
Highway hypnosis, yoga nidra, a novel you forget to look up from — those are cousins, not counterfeits. The family resemblance is absorption. The difference is whether someone is using the absorption on purpose.
How you get there, and back
An induction is the doorway. Deepening steadies the room. Emergence walks out the way you came. Skip the last one and the next hour feels wrong, even though nobody was trapped.
Fractionation — up and down, several times — is how some people get further than a single descent. It is still the same room.
Where the claims stop
Trance does not make someone tell the truth, love you, or forget their name unless they are playing. It does not diagnose, and it is not a treatment. Clinical uses belong to clinicians. Here the state is a craft material: for rest, for attention, and between adults for erotic hypnosis. The heat is in the books. This page is the noun.

FAQ
Is trance the same as hypnosis? No. Hypnosis is the craft. Trance is the state the craft uses. You can have absorption without anyone hypnotising anyone. You cannot do this work without some form of it.
Can you get stuck in trance? No. The state decays on its own. A clean emergence is courtesy and craft, not a rescue.
Does deeper trance mean stronger suggestions? Not reliably. A clear yes in a light state beats a vague yes in a deep one. Depth helps some work and gets in the way of other work — especially anything that needs images to stay sharp.
How do I know I was in trance? You often don't, from the inside, until afterward: time skipped, a sentence landed too easily, the chair felt farther away. The ideomotor signs are for the person watching, not a badge for the person inside.
