Emergence
Emergence — also called reorientation, awakening, or, in German, Ausleitung — is the structured walk back from trance into ordinary waking, on purpose. It is not a rescue. Nobody is stuck. It is courtesy, hygiene, and the last suggestion of the session.
Skip it and people still come back. They just come back sideways: foggy, droppy, a little wrong in the next hour. That is not mystery. That is an unfinished exit.
The practice — the words, the water, the ten quiet minutes — lives in the aftercare guide. This page is the noun.
What it is not
It is not proof that hypnosis is dangerous. The folk question "can you get stuck?" is answered here, once: no. Without further talking the state thins into rest or waking by itself. Emergence is how you choose the landing.
It is not optional just because the session was light. Light trance still borrowed the body's orientation. Give it back.
It is not the same as aftercare. Emergence ends the state. Aftercare looks after the person who just left it. They belong together. They are not the same word.
How it is actually done
You reverse the door.
If you counted down, you count up. If you walked a staircase, you walk it back. You return sensation to hands and feet, name the room, name the time of day, and you do not treat open eyes as the finish line. A body can look awake and still be halfway down.
Then you lift what you set. Every trigger, every post-hypnotic suggestion, every catalepsy or heaviness that was only for the session — spoken off, then tested once without the state attached. The house rule is simple: if you do not know what you installed, you cannot take it down. Keep a list.
Water. Sitting up slowly. A few minutes of nothing important. That last part is aftercare, and it is where drop is caught early.
Safety that is actually safety
The risk at the exit is the same banal risk as at a rapid door: people stand too fast. Sit until the legs are online. No stairs, no stove, no car, no "I'm fine" as a performance.
If someone is weepy, shaky, or far away, you do not pack the session. You orient: name, place, date, five things in the room. That is not therapy. That is coming back. Anything that looks like more than a rough landing belongs out of this room and toward someone qualified. See safety.

FAQ
What is emergence in hypnosis? The deliberate walk back to ordinary waking. Count up, return the body, lift what you set, then stay for the landing.
Can someone get stuck in hypnosis? No. The state ends on its own. A sloppy exit just makes the next hour worse.
What if their eyes stay closed at five? You wait. "At five, when you are ready." Forcing the lids is how you turn a landing into a fight. Silence here is not a crisis.
Is awakening the same as aftercare? No. Awakening ends the trance. Aftercare is what you do with the person who just woke.
