Stage hypnosis is hypnosis done as a show: a hall, a volunteer bench, and a set of phenomena chosen because they can be seen from the back row. It is real craft under theatrical conditions. It is not a different physics, and it is not a lie just because it is a show.
The conditions are the whole story. Understand those and the living-room failures stop being mysterious.
What it is not
It is not proof that the hypnotist owns minds. A good stage worker starts with the whole room, keeps the people who respond, and sends the rest back with a laugh. That is selection. Selection is not cheating. It is the job.
It is not "all fake." Some of it is compliance, some of it is genuine absorption, most of it is both — a person who wanted to play, in a room that expected play, doing things they would not have started alone. Suggestibility is uneven. The bench is the top of that curve.
It is not a template for the bedroom. The hall supplies expectancy at full power: tickets, lights, a professional whose job is this. Your sister-in-law on a kitchen chair supplies a raised eyebrow. Copying the visible half — the tug, the word "sleep" — without the invisible half is a dance without music.
What the hall actually provides
Selection. Opening tests for everyone; the bench is who moved.
Expectancy. The whole building says: this is about to happen.
Momentum. No dead air. Induction here is rapid because the load is already on the line, not because rapid is deeper.
An out. Embarrassment is shared with two hundred people. That is a strange kind of safety. It is also why some phenomena appear that would feel too silly in a quiet room — and why some people later feel used. Aftercare on stage is usually a bow. That is a known thin spot of the form.

Safety that is actually safety
People fall. Chairs without wheels. No one left standing with their knees unlocked. No phenomena that humiliate someone who did not volunteer for humiliation. The ethics of the form are not a vibe. They are which tests you run, and who you send back kindly.
Street hypnosis is the same craft with worse lighting and no bench. The safety bar goes up, not down.

Is stage hypnosis real? The phenomena are real enough. The conditions are theatrical. Both sentences are true.
Why does stage hypnosis fail at home? Because you copied the gesture and not the load: selection, expectancy, momentum. Build those small, or use a slow door.
Are volunteers faking? Some play along. Some drop. The interesting ones do both. A room that paid to see it is already a suggestion.
Is stage hypnosis safe? Mechanically, if people sit and someone can catch. Socially, it depends whether the show is done with the bench or at it. The second is why the form has a reputation.
