Suggestibility

Suggestibility is how readily a person takes a suggestion — a relatively stable, unevenly distributed trait, not a moral quality and not a switch. Hypnotizability is the same family measured with formal scales. The words get used as twins. Close enough for craft; not identical in a lab.

The live test on this site is the suggestibility test. This page is the noun. The test is small on purpose. It is a weather report, not a verdict.

What it is not

It is not intelligence, weakness, or how "open-minded" someone performs at dinner. High responders are not fools. Low responders are not strong-willed heroes. The trait cuts across that story.

It is not "hypnotisable or not." Most people sit in the middle. A minority move fast and far. A minority barely move on the usual tests. Stage hypnosis keeps the first group. You, at home, work with whoever actually sat down — which is why a failed first try is a sample of one, not a theory of the person. Not hypnotisable is almost never the last word.

It is not the same as compliance. Doing what the room expects is social. Taking a suggestion in the body — the arm that stays, the swallow that changes — is ideomotor. Both can be present. Only one is the craft.

What the scales actually measure

Stanford (SHSS), Harvard group (HGSHS), Spiegel's HIP, the old parlour tests (sway, clasp, Chevreul): they ask the body to do small, harmless things on a spoken idea, then they add. They do not measure your soul. They measure this afternoon's channel, under these instructions, with this much sleep.

A low score says: this door, today, did not open far. It does not say no other door exists. Some people who hate tests go easily on a story. Some who swing a pendulum will not take an erotic suggestion they did not ask for — which is consent, not a scale failure.

How to use the information

As a starting size, not as a caste. High responders still need a stop word and an exit. Low responders still deserve a slow induction and no mockery. The middle is where most partner work lives, which is why patience is a technique.

Do not use a score to pick a victim. Do not use a score as a pickup line. The test on this site exists so two adults can see the weather before they spend an evening arguing with it.

FAQ

What is hypnotic suggestibility? How readily someone takes a suggestion. A trait-ish tendency, uneven, not a virtue.

Can you increase suggestibility? A little, with trust, rest, and expectancy. Not from the bottom of the curve to the top by wanting it. Build the room. Do not try to rebuild the person.

Is the Spiegel eye-roll a real test? It is a quick, rough correlate some clinicians like. It is not destiny. Treat it as weather.

If the test says I am not hypnotisable, should I stop? No. Change the door, the timing, or the ask. Read how hypnosis works before you retire from a sample of one.
